a quote from my favorite author

“The most solid advice, though, for a writer is this, I think: Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep, really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell, and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”

My Secret Green Notebook

The Slice of Life Challenge is hosted by Two Writing Teachers
When I was younger, I loved Anastasia Krupnik and her 'Secret Green Notebook' from the book named after her by Lois Lowry.  So, today I decided to connect to my inner child and create an Anastasia-style pair of lists.
This is what my tattered copy looks like.
Here is a page from Anastasia's notebook from Anastasia Krupnik by Lois Lowry

Things I Love!

Books That Make Me Feel Nostalgic (like Anastasia Krupnik)
Two Writing Teachers
Being Hopeful
Barking Dogs
Calling My Mom
Perfect Outfit Days
French Fries
Singing In The Car
Falling Asleep
Sharing Secrets
Barking Dogs (maybe!)

Things I Hate!

My Husband Falling Asleep Before Me
High Stakes Tests
Being Woken Up By An Alarm
Not Having A Slice Idea
Barking Dogs
Cottage Cheese
People Who Have Never Taught Middle School Making Decisions About Middle School Curriculum
Being Late

  1. I'm flattered our blog made the list of things you love. Heck, we beat out French fries and being hopeful. Wow. Thank you. :)

Like the inspiration you took from a book.

  2. Love the idea - wonder how that might work with my students for new slice ideas!

  3. I hope that you had a good day that included things from your I Love list.

  4. There is something about these list I find so appealing--I think I like the glimpse it gives me into what other people are really like. :)

  5. I so love this list. I love getting to know you. I hate missing a day reading. I love your word usage. I hate (like you) not having an idea to write.

  6. Perfect outfit days, makes one feel good on the inside when the outside looks awesome. Lists of loves/hates do reveal a lot. This is a fun peek into you.

  7. The way you composed this list is so intriguing to me. There are things on both the 'love' and the 'hate' list that are self-explanatory (or so I think), and others that seem to have a story behind them that I can only imagine. Love it!

  8. Wouldn't it be fun if everyone did this. We would learn a lot, wouldn't we? Great intro to it too.

  9. Love your lists--seems like you have a little writing to do...some of these, maybe all of these, would make great blog posts! Read you on Tuesday!

  10. Great lists, and I love that you got the idea from a book! I hate when my husband falls asleep before me too! :-) I may have to try a set of lists like this sometime!

  11. Enjoyed your lists, too. They're inspirations. Thanks for stirring my soul, Christy.
